Fee breakdown
What fees does Amazon charge?
Four charges make up almost every Amazon seller's costs. The calculator above combines them; here is what each one is.
-
Referral fee A commission Amazon takes on every sale as a percentage of the total sale price, charged no matter how you fulfil the order. Most categories are 15%, ranging from 8% (electronics) to 17%+ (apparel), with a $0.30 minimum per item.
-
FBA fulfillment fee A fixed per-unit charge when Amazon picks, packs and ships your order (FBA). It depends on the item's size and weight — not its price — and applies to FBA only.
-
Professional selling plan A flat $39.99/month for a Professional seller account, independent of sales. Spread across the units you sell, it adds a small per-unit cost.
-
Closing fee An extra $1.80 per item in media categories (books, music, video, video games, software), on top of the referral fee.
How the calculation works
A $25 standard-size product in Home & Kitchen, fulfilled by FBA:
Amazon referral fees by category
The referral fee is a percentage of the total sale price and varies by category. Common categories:
| Category | Referral fee |
|---|---|
| Most categories | 15% |
| Electronics, Computers | 8% |
| Automotive, Industrial | 12% |
| Clothing & Accessories | 5%–17% (tiered by price) |
| Jewelry | 20% (up to $250) |
| Amazon Device Accessories | 45% |

FBM vs FBA: how fees differ
With FBM (Fulfilled by Merchant) you ship orders yourself, so the referral fee is the only Amazon charge per sale. With FBA (Fulfilled by Amazon) you add a per-unit fulfillment fee for picking, packing and shipping — the referral fee still applies on top.
Which is cheaper depends on your size, weight and shipping costs. To compare profit against your product cost on both models, use the FBA Calculator.
How to reduce your Amazon fees
A few levers move your effective fee rate the most:
-
List in the right category Referral rates vary widely — make sure your product is in the lowest correct category, never a higher-fee one by mistake.
-
Optimise packaging dimensions FBA fees jump between size tiers. Trimming dimensions or weight to drop into a lower tier can cut the fulfillment fee outright.
-
Increase sell-through The $39.99/month plan is fixed, so the more units you sell, the smaller its per-unit share. Faster turnover amortises it.
-
Control long-term storage Aged FBA inventory incurs long-term storage fees. Keep stock moving and remove dead inventory before those charges build up.
Amazon seller fees: FAQ
Referral and FBA fulfillment fees are only charged when an item sells, so unsold units don't incur them. However, the $39.99/month Professional plan and any FBA storage fees still apply while the inventory sits.
On the total sale price — the item price plus shipping in most categories — not on your profit. Amazon takes its percentage off the top regardless of your costs or margin.
Yes. Referral fee percentages are unchanged for 2026. FBA fulfillment fees increased on 15 January 2026, and a 3.5% fuel & logistics surcharge applies on top of fulfillment fees from April 2026 — all reflected here.
This tool focuses on Amazon's fees and your payout for both FBM and FBA. The FBA Calculator adds your product cost to show profit, margin and ROI.
Yes — most categories carry a $0.30 minimum referral fee per item, which matters most for very low-priced products.
